THE ROLE AND CHALLENGES OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (A CASE STUDY OF REMO NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT)

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on the role and challenges of local government in national development using Remo North Local government as a case study. Specifically, the study aimed to examine the roles and responsibilities of Remo North Local Government in national development, investigate the primary challenges faced by Remo North Local Government in fulfilling its roles, and recommend strategies that can enhance the role and effectiveness of Remo North Local Government in national development. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. Questionnaire was used for data collection which was raised against a five Likert scale of Strongly Agree(SA), Agree(A), Undecided(U), Disagree(D), and Strongly Disagree(SD), and was analysed using the frequency counts, percentages, mean and standard deviation. A total of 100 respondents were conveniently selected as sample size comprising of residents of Remo North Local Government. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed that the roles and responsibilities of Remo North Local Government in national development includes Provision of Basic Services such as Education, health, Infrastructure, Water and Sanitation etc, Local Economic Development, Governance and Administration, and Social Services and Welfare. Also, the primary challenges faced by Remo North Local Government in fulfilling its roles includes Financial Constraints, Administrative and Capacity Challenges, Political Interference and Governance Issues, and Infrastructural Deficiencies and Social and Environmental Challenges.. On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that Financial constraints are a major barrier to the local government's ability to provide essential services and promote development. The government should address these financial issues through diversified revenue streams and improved financial management can significantly enhance the local government's capacity.
